NACA 0012 Tutorial updated by LES
We made an extensive research on a classic NACA 0012 airfoil at high angle of attack. We intentionally picked a flow regime dominated by separation and turbulence.
To capture the physics, we compared: RANS (k-ω SST), URANS (k-ω SST), DES (k-ω SST), and LES (WALE)
The video shows how each turbulence modeling approach resolves the vortical structures behind the stalled airfoil. From the smoothed-out RANS to the highly detailed LES, the differences are striking.
This is part of our research on turbulence models that balance accuracy with industrial applicability.
Key Take aways:
-The granularity of flow structures (vorticity)
-Cd,Cl, and Strouhal differ slightly but surely
-LES produces smaller drag and higher lift
-simulation time (and stability) differ significantly (top->down: RANS, URANS, DES, LES)
